“Being a Community Agent: Guidelines and Strategies for Collaborating with the Community” is the motto of the cycle of sessions aimed at training community agents, which began on November 13 at the headquarters of the Association of Lusofonia, Cultura e Cidadania (ALCC), located in Ameixoeira, in Lisbon.

The initiative is promoted by AIDGLOBAL – Action and Integration for Global Development, within the scope of the “NEAR – NEwly ARrived in a common home” project, and runs from November 13th to December 18th, 2021, with the purpose of informing and empowering participants for a sustained and informed orientation of newly arrived migrants.

The first session, held at the premises of the ALCC, in Lisbon, had 12 people registered and favored a set of contents dedicated to the first guidelines that are necessary for the reception of a migrant person. Topics such as general basic needs, including housing, employment or school, in the case of minor migrants; the first bureaucracies, such as those involving the request for the Taxpayer Number or access to the labor market, were some of the main themes highlighted.

First Training for Community Agents

The opening of the initiative was marked by a brief introduction and contextualization of the NEAR project and Training by Cátia Sousa, Project Technician at AIDGLOBAL, who was succeeded by trainer Verena Melo, responsible for transmitting the aforementioned contents. The action was also attended by the AIDGLOBAL Animator, Maria Pacheco, and with the support of Sek Sar, an experienced community agent who has been supporting AIDGLOBAL within the scope of the NEAR project, namely by supporting the dissemination of this moment formative.

“NEAR – NEwly ARrived in a common home” is a European project funded by the European Commission, under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) with the ISMU Foundation as a promoter and as partner entities Tamat, CARDET, and AIDGLOBAL and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. In Portugal, this project is being developed in the city of Lisbon, namely in the district of Galinheiras, located in the parish of Santa Clara.
